Why cybersecurity education is taking off at Heathrow Airport

    • You might not think of cybersecurity first when it comes to airport safety, but Jasvinder Pham, Head of Cyber Development and Assurance and Matthew Bourne, Cyber Security Manager, believes it's at the heart of London Heathrow's safety practice. And education is their most important protective gear against cybercriminals that use psychological tricks, also known as social engineering, on their staff. In Tomorrow Unlocked's video Next Departure: Fighting Cybercrime, Pham and Bourne outline how they're helping Heathrow staff see through cybercriminals' mind games. What is social engineering? And Pham says it's a common tactic. "Nine out of ten breaches are done through social engineering. At Heathrow, we tend to get scattergun emails across the whole estate. We call that phishing. They'll ask a user to enter login and password details or click a link." Learning to recognize the mind tricks Where phishing emails are a scattergun approach, the Heathrow cybersecurity team responds with carefully targeted cybersecurity education. They use internal advertising to raise staff awareness of social engineering techniques, then send out their own phishing-style test emails to see who takes the bait. It's part of a wider cybersecurity education program based on identifying those who can benefit most from the learning. Bourne says, "We've turned training courses on their head by asking the questions first. If you answer them all correctly, you don't need the training. If you don't, you can sometimes complete training in less than 10 minutes." Bourne believes cybersecurity training should resemble real-world cyberthreat situations. "We've started using live actors to get a bigger impact and bring it to the context of the airport." Customers are ready for better security Pham says Heathrow wants to be on the cutting edge of security technology, but it's not always easy. "We want to stay one step ahead, but I feel like we're one step behind." But Pham believes one thing on their side is staff and customer readiness to embrace the latest security features. "People use services like WhatsApp and multi-factor authentication in their home. They want more, so we need to make sure we don't miss out."

This balloon shows why businesses need better endpoint security

    • It's not easy getting your head around endpoint protection for business. But with a toothpick and a balloon, Matt White, CEO of software-as-a-service platform XaaS Ltd, makes it simple. Every organization's 'attack surface' has expanded like a balloon thanks to increasing digitalization and smart devices in the workplace. But cybercriminals, like a toothpick trying to pop that balloon, now have more ways of getting in and reducing your network to shreds. The reality is even more extreme, White says, with thousands of cybercriminal toothpicks trying to pop your balloon at once. The toothpicks are also getting sharper, suggests Kaspersky Senior Security Researcher Noushin Shabab. "Cybercriminals are now using AI and machine learning to make their attacks more sophisticated." What are endpoints, and why better protect them? Today, businesses' attack surfaces are bigger than ever because there are more 'endpoints' – any device connected to the network, from mobile phones to webcams to fridges. White says that's "a total chaotic mess" from a security perspective. Endpoints are cybercriminals' favorite way to get into networks. Market data analysis firm IDC's 2019 study found 70 percent of breaches started at an endpoint. What's the best way to protect endpoints? Antivirus software used to do much of the heavy lifting in business security, but White says the new threat landscape demands more robust security. "Endpoint detection and response (EDR) is like antivirus on steroids. It doesn't just detect and identify. It isolates malicious code and repairs. Spending more on that kind of system is like an insurance policy – it may protect you from a lot more damage down the line." He compares endpoint detection and response with a COVID-19 vaccination. "You know you may still catch it, but you can make it far less serious by getting a vaccine upfront." Check what level of endpoint protection your business needs. White thinks the new cyber threat level demands a new way of working, too. "It's not just plugging in the latest shiny box that's going to secure a network. Everyone has to work together – all parts of a company, regulators, financial authorities – to create collaboration. It's a team game." And that might be a good thing for business overall, as well as for business security.

How police identify criminals selling data on the dark web

    • In the north of England, a team of officers are getting creative. They're finding ways to identify criminals selling personal data, fake COVID-19 vaccines and child sexual abuse images on the dark web. Tomorrow Unlocked's film Lighting up the Dark Web follows the UK's Yorkshire and Humber Regional Cybercrime Unit (RCCU) in their quest to unmask a crime ring selling personal data for fraud. What is the dark web? The dark web is a network of computers where web traffic is anonymized. Many use it to access marketplaces and other sites to commit crime. The dark web can also be used for good. Dissidents, whistleblowers and investigative journalists use it to communicate anonymously online, and others use it to avoid online data collection. The sale of personal data is big business on the dark web. Fraudsters can buy names, dates of birth, credit card information and more. The FBI reports losses from fraud topped 4 billion US dollars in 2020. Linking dark web identities and real-world people In 2014, a trader called Data Pro was selling National Insurance numbers, dates of birth, credit card numbers and more on the dark web marketplace Evolution. RCCU suspected the source was a UK-based business. RCCU used 'slips' – when Data Pro occasionally used identifiable information – to link his clear web and dark web identities. How businesses can protect themselves from dark web criminals While the dark web seemed impossible to control in the past, law enforcement is now getting ahead. Businesses can also act to give fraudsters less opportunity to make dark web profits out of their data. First and foremost, protect your business's data from being stolen with strong data security practices, including encrypting your data and educating employees on how to avoid accidentally giving cybercriminals access. Your people are your most important security feature because most breaches start with basic errors like clicking a link in a rogue email or giving login details to someone who isn't who they said they were. If your data is already stolen and ends up on the dark web, dark web monitoring services like Have I Been Pwned may help you identify a breach and alert those whose information was stolen faster. As law enforcement becomes more cyber savvy, there are fewer places for cybercriminals to hide. Increasing international cooperation is also helping light up the darkest parts of the web. Businesses also have a part to play by reducing the opportunities for their data to be stolen and sold.
