Woburn, MA – January 8, 2018– Kaspersky Lab today announces that Andrey Lavrentyev, head of the technology research department, future technologies, will be presenting a session, "Detecting ICS Attacks Using Recurrent Neural Networks," at the S4x18 ICS Cybersecurity Conference in Miami, FL on January 16, 2018.

Who: Andrey Lavrentyev is the head of the technology research department, future technologies, at Kaspersky Lab. Currently, his research focuses include the data-driven approach to the cyber-security of cyber-physical systems, machine learning, deep neural networks, and cognitive systems. Lavrentyev is responsible for cybersecurity technology research for Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Internet of Things (IoT) at Kaspersky Lab.

What: During this highly technical session, Lavrentyev will explain Kaspersky Lab’s Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection (MLAD) approach to detect attacks on ICS operational technology (OT). Using the correlation between signals from sensors and controls, MLAD trains a recurrent neural network to recognize signal behavior under normal operating conditions and then predicts signals values in online mode. If the summed mean-square-error between predicted and observed signal values exceeds the statistically matched threshold, MLAD detects an anomaly. The proposed approach allows for anomaly early detection and interpretation.

During the talk, the RNN detection approach will be demonstrated and explained using the well-known Tennessee Eastman Process during a cyberattack simulation. The demonstration will include a realistic mathematical model of plant, 3D-plant visualization and actual Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s). The result of Kaspersky Lab’s proposed MLAD method compared to other machine learning approaches has previously been presented during workshops at scientific conferences, such as NIPS2016 and ICML2017.

When: The presentation is on January 16, 2018, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. ET.

Where:  S4x18 ICS Cybersecurity Conference, January 16 – 18 in Miami South Beach, FL.

In its 11th year, Digital Bond’s annual flagship S4 event is amongst the most advanced and largest ICS cyber security events, featuring leading industry content and top expert presenters and attendees.
