Kaspersky Lab Patents Data Analysis Technology to Combat Increasingly Sophisticated Malware

WOBURN, MA - June 18, 2009-Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of Internet threat protection solutions that defend against computer viruses, spyware and all forms of malicious software, has been awarded a U.S. patent (#7 540 030) for a new data analysis system that creates software scripts to automatically delete malware, and trains itself to recognize and prevent similar threats in the future.

This automatic detection will help IT administrators overcome the security challenges created by massive amounts of data being spread across business networks faster than ever before as users find new ways to connect and collaborate.  This patented technology combines new and old detection methodologies and provides a higher level of malware detection, with fewer false-positives, and enables large volumes of data to be processed without draining system resources.

Invented by Kaspersky Lab senior technical specialist Oleg Zaytsev, this system aggregates data generated by the behavior of applications, typically stored in event logs, systems scans and user records of quarantined files.  This data is analyzed to create patterns and statistics which are then used to find hidden malware, and once identified, generate software scripts that will automatically remove the existing threat.  This degree of automation is especially useful for protecting large volumes of data.

The scripts generated by Kaspersky Lab's new system can be fine-tuned by IT administrators to best fit the needs of their organization.  As more data is gathered over time, the software is trained to recognize malware with similar characteristics in subsequent encounters, making the system "smarter" and better-equipped for more efficient management of future threats.

"This technology helps increase response times to newly emerging threats and streamlines the user's communication with the technical support service. The fuzzy logic and artificial intelligence systems incorporated in the patented technology build up knowledge that can be classified and used to carry out self-training."

Kaspersky Lab currently has more than 30 patent applications pending in the US and Russia related to a range of innovative technologies developed by company personnel.
