How to Hack the Power Grid through Home Air Conditioners - WIRED

Researchers have found another way to take down the power grid: by remotely manipulating home and office air conditioners to create a surge. Air conditioner users who have installed remote shut-off devices to conserve energy can be easily manipulated by hackers, according to Vasilios Hioureas of Kaspersky Lab and Thomas Kinsey of Exigent Systems, who presented their research this week at the Security Analyst Summit in Tenerife, Spain. The implications of this research are larger than a hot summer day with no air conditioning – turning the devices on full speed could lead to a power surge and in-turn a widespread blackout.
