One of the guiding principles of my company has always been to marry the business of selling IT security solutions with in-depth research of malware and cybercrime. Our being called a ‘Lab’ is no marketing trick; we are and always have been a research facility. Research has helped us accumulate a vast amount of know-how, which has contributed significantly to our developing some very decent award-winning security products and solutions. It’s obvious that knowing your enemy is important in being able to provide effective protection against it. So when we investigate suspicious behavior on a corporate client’s network and find new tailored malware, or help police catch cybercriminals, we’re also furthering our knowledge, making us stronger as a business. And when new customers come to us, they can bring new tricky issues, helping us once again to improve.
However, when a customer company that has been badly affected by a cyber-incident asks us to investigate it, it’s not all that bothered about getting a detailed technical report from us on how exactly the hack happened. What it wants is to make sure it will not be repeated, and to get its money back if possible. It wants the cybercriminals involved to be charged and prosecuted for the crime they committed.
