FIDE and World Chess launch new online gaming platform protected by Kaspersky

June 19, 2020

Woburn, MA – June 19, 2020 -Kaspersky today announces it will bring its unique knowledge and expertise to the gaming world by providing security for the new online chess gaming platform introduced by FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs) and World Chess. This platform will provide millions of chess players around the world with an opportunity to receive the official FIDE online ratings and titles of International Master or Grandmaster.

Chess, one of the world’s oldest games, has gained considerable momentum over the last few months as it did not need to be put on hold due to self-isolation restrictions, with people continuing to play online. The new gaming platform, the FIDE Online Arena, aims to significantly expand the chess playing community, by providing online players with an exclusive opportunity to obtain official online FIDE ratings and titles, including that of the Online Grandmaster. This is a breakthrough announcement as professional chess has only been available to a select number of players who were able to afford high-ranking chess coaches and attend official competitions.

As an official cybersecurity partner for the FIDE World Chess Championship series, Kaspersky also provides a complex protection for the newly released gaming platform. First, the company’s Security Services team performed a security assessment for the FIDE Online Arena to identify possible security issues on the website and developed a set of recommendations for improving the platform and user security. Kaspersky also provides the platform with protection from DDoS attacks, analyzing the website’s load with various techniques that help to detect an attack on time and use traffic filtering mechanisms. Thus, even if there is an attack, all users will retain constant access to the platform.

“Since all the major live sporting events have been postponed in the interest of public safety, millions of sports fans have turned to online tournaments,” said Alexander Moiseev, Chief Business Officer, Kaspersky. “Many are finding them as exciting as offline sport events, with chess fans being among the most active online gamers. However, online gaming is not immune to cyberthreats. Hackers target gaming platforms with all types of malware, with an aim of stealing gamers’ credentials, in-game goods or bank accounts. With the new chess gaming platform being a major step forward for this sport, we’re honored to provide the best in class cybersecurity for the FIDE Online Arena, protecting thousands of users as they make their way to becoming a Grandmaster.”

Kaspersky has been supporting the FIDE World Chess Championship series since 2017 and continues to deliver security to the FIDE headquarters, several national chess federations, chess players competing in the FIDE World Chess Championship, and the infrastructure of the tournament. The partnership also includes cybersecurity training for players.

Moreover, the company has been continuously supporting outstanding chess players. In 2016, the company sponsored chess Grandmaster and World Vice Champion Sergey Karjakin; and since 2012, it has been supporting the young Candidate Master Andrey Tsvetkov, as well as Grandmaster and world junior chess champion Mikhail Antipov. Within these partnerships, Kaspersky provides information security and helps with arranging and participating in sporting tournaments.
