Clever bank hack allowed crooks to make unlimited ATM withdrawals - Ars Technica

Banking malware is using techniques once reserved for state-sponsored hacking gangs. The malware package recently discovered by Kaspersky Lab researchers, called Metel, is a perfect example of the growing sophistication of hackers targeting banks. According to Kaspersky researchers, the package contains more than 30 separate modules which can be tailored to the computer it is infecting. Kaspersky researchers provided two other examples of APT-style techniques used against financial institutions, GCMAN and Carbanak 2.0. All three gangs appear to be active and are known to have collectively infected 29 organizations in Russia. The researchers said they suspect the number of institutions hit by the groups is much higher.
