Kaspersky Lab's second annual North American Cup security competition is now open for submissions. Deadline for research papers is Oct. 16, 2012.

The theme for this year's international student competition, now in its second year, is “Cyber Security for the Next Generation 2013,” and encourages students around the world to submit original research addressing some of the “most burning issues relating to global cybercrime,” Kaspersky Lab said.

Last year's competition was wrapped around a bigger conference at NYU Poly as part of the Cyber Security Awareness Week with presentations from IT professionals, academics, and law enforcement.

Finalists for the North American Cup will present their papers at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University on Nov. 15 to Nov. 17.
