More than Half of Participants Store Personal Information and Data on Mobile Devices

Woburn, MA – October 23, 2013 – According to the recent Consumer Security Risks survey conducted by Kaspersky Lab and B2B International, one in every six consumers has experienced loss, theft or damage to a portable digital device – a laptop, smartphone or tablet - in the last 12 months. In addition to the physical loss, consumers are also losing the valuable personal data stored on the devices.

A closer look at the results reveals that 9 percent of the users’ devices were irreparably damaged, 3 percent of devices were lost and 4 percent were stolen. The survey also showed the variety of data that is stored on smartphones (not including iPhones) and tablets (not including iPads), and the percentages of survey participants that stored the data on their devices:

  • Personal photos and video: 76 percent of smartphones and 65 percent of tablets
  • Personal email correspondence: 64 percent of smartphones and 61 percent of tablets
  • Passwords to personal and email accounts: 22 percent of smartphones and 23 percent of tablets.
  • Work email messages: 32 percent of smartphones and 28 percent of tablets
  • Business documents: 20 percent of smartphones and 29 percent of tablets
  • Financial information, specifically passwords to online banking accounts: 10 percent of both smartphones and tablets

Losing any of type of data from a mobile device can not only be devastating, but also have serious consequences if it falls into the wrong hands. Situations, like company confidential information being breached, social networks accounts being compromised or online banking systems being broken into, are less than ideal. Fortunately, there is a reliable and convenient way to dramatically reduce the risk of further crises.
