Woburn, MA – May 12, 2010 – As the number of people using social networking sites increases, so are the phishing attacks being waged against users. According to the Evolution of Spam, Q1 2010 report from Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of Internet threat management solutions that protect against all forms of malicious software. Facebook has become one of the top five targets for phishers. The top five sites targeted during the first quarter of 2010 were: PayPal, eBay, HSBC, Facebook, and Google.

Other interesting pieces of data from the report include:

  • Phishing emails accounted for 57% of the total volume of e-mail from January to March 2010
  • In Q1 2010, the percentage of spam in email traffic averaged 85.2%
  • The U.S. (16%), India (7%) and Russia (6%) were the key sources of spam throughout Q1 ‘10
  • In 12% of spam messages, graphic attachments were included – trying to lure users into opening a corrupted file
