The Digital Citizens Alliance has produced a study regarding the increased number of ransomware attacks over the last few years, which has grown to 700,000 households falling victim in the last year. The group focused on the attacks that are executed through free “pirate” websites where criminals are attempting to sell or showcase stolen movies. By simply visiting the site, victims often find themselves infected. Kaspersky Lab’s Michael Canavan offered insight into how criminals are monetizing on this type of ransomware, as well as expanding their repertoire to include ransomware attacks against hospitals and financial institutions.
