Kaspersky Lab, a Moscow-based Internet security company with operations in Woburn, is a familiar name to Boston sports fans through its advertising on New England Patriots broadcasts. But the company’s discovery of one of history’s biggest bank robberies shows that it is a major global player in the cybersecurity industry.

On Monday, Kaspersky said a ring of Internet criminals may have stolen as much as $1 billion from banks around the world since 2013. And according to one report, the same band of crooks may have masterminded the theft last year of about 1.2 million credit card numbers from Framingham-based Staples Inc., the office supply chain.

“We can safely say that they stole hundreds of millions of dollars,” said Chris Doggett, managing director of Kaspersky Lab North America. “At Kaspersky Lab we think it’s north of half a billion.” Read more.
