Of particular note is the fact that the number of messages containing malicious attachments increased in June this year, just as it did in June 2008. World news stories were used by spammers primarily to get users to open malicious attachments. Though there were relatively few innovations in terms of techniques used to spread spam, it’s difficult to say whether the spammers are taking a break for the summer or are getting ready for the new season.
