The cybercriminals’ main activity is focused on Windows as it remains the primary platform on the PC market. This does not mean Linux is invulnerable: the popularity of this operating system is growing which will inevitably lead to an increase in the number of threats. According to Kaspersky Lab’s cybercrime outlook, Windows will maintain its leading positions in the near future; however the expansion of alternative operating systems will prompt the appearance of new types of malware. Gartner says that in 2010, Oracle and Red Hat, the vendors of Linux-based solutions, became the most rapidly developing companies in the OS market.

The use of different operating systems in the corporate environment brings to the fore the issues of centralized administration and the implementation of global security policies. That makes it important to have an integrated tool to provide control over all workstations regardless of the type of OS used. Besides, even the less frequently attacked Linux-based computer can become an involuntary “accomplice” in malware distribution if a virus on an unprotected Windows-based machine uses the corporate network resource as a means for its own expansion.
