In late December two Ukrainian power companies were hacked, leaving tens of thousands of people in darkness. Experts generally agree that although malware didn’t cause the blackout itself, a cyberattack did play an important role. The malware found in affected networks was a variant of BlackEnergy, a program originally designed to infect computers and add them to a botnet, which has seen many evolutions over the years. In 2010 when researchers at Kaspersky Lab were investigating Black Energy 2, they predicted the high potential behind the malicious tool and possible dangerous effects.
